United States
Direct Tax Of 1798: Pennsylvania
The United States Congress, under the Act of 14 July 1798 (1 Stat. 597)
created the first property tax of its citizens. Compiled to facilitate the first
federal tax based on wealth (Act of July 14, 1798), these lists and summary
abstracts not only document property owners but also the number and types of
buildings and slaves that they owned. In the majority of the States, these lists
have not survived. Pennsylvania does have the most complete list and is
available on microfilm.

Naturalization Records: What Are
They?
In 1802, the Naturalization Act established the three part process that is
still used today. An alien must declare his or her intention to become a
citizen, observe the required residence period, and then petition an authorized
court for admission to become a citizen. This process is both judicial
(occurring before and by order of a court, and administrative (under the
supervision of U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Department of
